I recently started using iPhoto.
Again.
Since I am often changing platforms because I can never decide what I like, I’ve always been afraid to commit myself to a single, closed source and single-platform solution for storing my precious photos.
Recently though, I’ve come to realise that I will probably use my mac for a long time to come, so I decided to give iPhoto another shot.
However, while iPhoto is a great app for storing images and you could easilly export your pics, things like albums and some meta-data will never be exported to a system where I can be sure that my photos are safe even if I decide to use a linux PC eventually or whatever.
There have been some solutions to export iPhoto albums into various online services, like TypePad, but TypePad photos can not be exported, and the service costs money, so when you run out of cash, you can say goodbye to those pics.
So I’ve decided to see if I can do something about it. To create some sort of application or interface which would allow me to save my pictures, and whatever metadata I deem worthy, into a format that will survive the test of time, platform and wont depend on my debit card containing funds (which, with my unstable lifestyle is not always the case).
